Summerland Credit Union and Cufa have launched an emergency appeal for the victims of the recent tsunami in Indonesia.
More than 2,000 people have been confirmed dead after a 7.5 magnitude earthquake caused a tsunami on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi. Another 5,000 people are still missing, feared to be buried in parts of the coastal city of Palu. Over 80,000 people are now living in temporary shelters or have been displaced by the disaster.
All of the donations will be going directly to the Red Cross Earthquakes and Tsunami Appeal. The funds will go to supporting the families that have been affected with emergency relief and recovery assistance such as food, water, sanitation and shelter.
Summerland Chief Executive Officer, Margot Sweeny stated “Summerland is a proud member and supporter of Cufa through their Village Entrepreneur Program in South-East Asia. We hope the newly created Tsunami Relief Fund will give some support to the Red Cross teams on the ground, whilst making a difference to the lives of those Indonesian people who have lost so much.”
Cufa’s Chief Executive Officer, Dr Peter Mason commented, “Cufa’s work focuses on our neighbours in the Asia-Pacific. The recent tsunami in Indonesia is another in a region that has experienced so many of them. It is imperative that victims of natural disasters are provided humanitarian assistance in the form of emergency food and water supplies and shelter.”
The disaster comes two months after a 7.0 magnitude earthquake hit the popular tourist island of Lombok, displacing more than 417,000 people and killing 563 people.
