Nimbin: The environmental capital of the Northern Rivers

Located in the northern corner of the Lismore catchment area in New South Wales, Nimbin has a population of around 2,000 people.

As one of the hot spots for tourists, approximately 160,000 visitors come to Nimbin every year. Renowned for its stance on environmental sustainability, Nimbin boasts a host of businesses and organisations that have the environment at the heart of everything they do, some of which we have highlighted below for you.

Nimbin Happy High Herbs

Since 1998, this small business has been selling local herbs and medicines; many which have been directly sourced from local growers within the Northern Rivers. They stock a range of the finest certified organic teas, local plants, superfoods, tonics, aphrodisiacs and lotions, plus local crafts and gifts. You can visit the shop at 60a Cullen St or on their online shop.

Nimbin Environment Centre

As a voluntary not-for-profit organisation, the centre keeps the community updated on environmental events and causes. Historically the centre has successfully helped save Terania Creek and The Nightcap Forest and state that they are “very conscious of our continuous role as custodians of this land, hand in hand with its first people: The Bundjalung nation”. As a group they meet monthly to discuss activities in the area. You can visit the centre at 54 Cullen St.

Rainbow Power Company

From 1987 the experts at Rainbow Power Company have designed and provided some of the highest quality solar and renewable energy solutions across the Far North Coast. The head office in Nimbin is powered by a 16 kW grid feed solar array with a battery back-up. It also features many energy saving features including composting toilets, solar hot water and rain water tanks. Guided tours of the office for groups can be booked for a small fee.

Nimbin Organic Food Co-Operative

Owned by the community and operated by volunteers, the Organic Food Co-op supplies members with healthy, affordable and ethically sourced food that is grown locally in the region. Since 2014, they have maintained a sustainable management model, which is reflecting in the low prices for customers. This includes a zero use of plastic. You can visit the shop at 50 Cullen St. More information about volunteering at the Co-op and becoming a member can be found on their website.
