How to protect yourself from cyber threats

Cybercrimes are attacks directed at digital computers or other devices, and include things like online fraud, identity theft and phishing. However, just because they are digital, doesn’t make them any less damaging or scary.

Here are a series of tips to protect yourself online, and the lengths we go to at Summerland Bank to secure you from cyber threats.

Password Security

In an increasingly digital world, safeguarding your online presence and personal information is paramount. Creating strong, unique passwords and updating them regularly is a crucial step in fortifying your online defences.

Two-Factor Authentication

Add an extra layer of protection to your online accounts with what’s called ‘two-factor authentication’ or 2FA. After you have entered a username and password (the first factor), a second factor can then be sent to the user’s device, including a fingerprint scan, FaceID, security code or question, or a smart card insert. This is a simple yet powerful way to ensure that only you can access your accounts and keep your data safe from unauthorised access.

Phishing Awareness – Avoid getting hooked

Keep on top of the tricks and tactics used by cybercriminals in phishing attacks and arm yourself with the knowledge and awareness to spot and avoid phishing scams. Being aware of common phishing red flags — such as posing as a loved one asking for money — is your first line of defence against online deception.

Secure Browsing

Taking steps to enhance your online privacy and security can help ensure a safer online experience. Look out for the padlock icon and ‘https’ in your browser’s address bar, which are both indicators of a secure connection. It means you can navigate, manage, and monitor your finances with confidence, knowing your information is safer.

Mobile Security

As convenient as they are, your mobile device can be a treasure trove of personal data. Secure your smartphone and protect your information on the go by keeping your operating system and apps updated to ensure you have the latest security features. It can also be a good idea to use strong, unique passwords and consider biometric security features like fingerprint or face recognition, and enable features that allow you to locate, lock, or wipe your device remotely if lost or stolen. Remember: mobile security is not just about apps; it’s about safeguarding your entire digital life.

Card Security

Your payment cards are vulnerable to theft and fraud, not only face-to-face but online as well. Learning to protect your cards, spot unauthorised transactions, and take precautions online can help keep your money safe. For example, you can create a separate email account just for online shopping with a different password from your other accounts, and even a different bank account. If your card is lost or stolen, report it immediately by calling us or by selecting the ‘Updated Card Status’ option under ‘Services’ in your internet banking.
