Online child sexual exploitation, financial coercion & vulnerability.

The internet is part of everyday life for many children and young people, supporting learning, connection and communication. However, national agencies have identified that it can also expose children to serious risks, including online child sexual exploitation, which may not always be visible or easy to detect.

In some situations, online child sexual exploitation can involve financial elements, such as pressure to transfer money, purchase gift cards, share banking details, or unexplained changes in spending behaviour.

Banks regularly support customers experiencing vulnerability, including financial stress, scams, fraud and coercion. Understanding the broader risks facing families helps create safer financial environments and supports earlier awareness across the community.

Law enforcement and child protection agencies note that online child sexual exploitation can occur gradually and may be accompanied by behavioural or financial changes. Importantly, children and young people are never at fault in these situations. Offenders can be highly manipulative, and secrecy is often driven by fear or shame.

Access to trusted, factual information is an important part of awareness. Parents and carers can find general information about online child sexual exploitation, including grooming and sexual extortion, through the Australian Centre to Counter Child Exploitation (ACCCE)NSW Crimes Stoppers has also developed a very practical factsheet for parents and carers that provides useful tips and information.

At Summerland Bank, we believe financial wellbeing is closely linked to feeling safe, informed and supported. Sharing trusted information on issues that affect our communities is part of our role as a customer-owned bank.
