Stay smart and secure this tax season.

As the end of the financial year approaches, there’s a sense of anticipation in the air – tax returns, EOFY sales, and maybe even a little extra money back in your pocket. But while you’re planning how to put that potential refund to good use, scammers are also gearing up, hoping to catch people off guard.

The good news? A few simple tips can go a long way in keeping your personal and financial information safe.

Don’t fall for the rush

Scammers love urgency.  It’s how they pressure you into acting without thinking. If you get a call, email, or text saying your refund is ready right now or that you must act immediately to avoid penalties, take a step back. The ATO doesn’t operate on scare tactics, they won’t rush or threaten you.

Keep your personal info personal

Your Tax File Number (TFN), bank details, or login credentials should never be shared on social media or via email or text. Legitimate organisations, including the ATO, will never ask for personal details this way. If in doubt, don’t respond.

Verify first, respond later

Got a call or message claiming to be from the ATO? Don’t use the contact details provided in the message. Look up the ATO’s official number yourself and get in touch directly to confirm whether it’s legitimate.

Beware of dodgy links

Scam emails and texts often include links or QR codes designed to steal your data. The ATO will never send unsolicited messages asking you to log in to your account via a link. If it feels suspicious, it probably is.

Know the red flags

The ATO will never:

  • Send robocalls to your phone
  • Threaten you with arrest or demand immediate payment
  • Ask you to pay fees to receive your refund
  • Request payment via gift cards, crypto, or vouchers
  • Cancel your TFN
  • Send links or QR codes to log into services

Spot any of these? It’s likely to be a scam.

Talk about it

Scams thrive in silence. Have conversations with friends and family, especially those who might be more vulnerable. The more people know what to look out for, the harder it becomes for scammers to succeed.

Stay informed, be confident

With just a little know-how, you can shop the EOFY sales, plan your next step, and breeze through tax season with peace of mind. You’ve got this.
