How you can make a difference this holiday season.

For many people, the holiday season is a time for gathering, celebrating, and reconnecting. But for others, it can be a difficult time marked by loneliness, financial stress, or cultural disconnection. One simple way to make the season more meaningful is through volunteering, and there are plenty of ways to get involved, even if you only have a little time to give.

As a community bank, we know how important local organisations and volunteers are to the wellbeing of the Northern Rivers. That’s why we support community groups throughout the year, from conservation projects to local festivals and fundraising events.

Volunteering over the holidays helps strengthen the community, brings people together, and supports those who may not have family or may not celebrate Christmas at all. Whether you prefer hands-on help, community events, or small acts of kindness, every contribution makes a difference.

Finding the right volunteering opportunity

If you’re thinking about volunteering but not sure where to start, begin by considering what matters most to you. A few things to think about are:

  • How much time you can give
Some roles require only an hour or two, while others run all day. Choose what fits comfortably around your schedule.
  • What type of support you want to offer
Do you enjoy working with people? Are you better suited to behind-the-scenes help? Both are equally valuable.
  • Your connection to the cause
Many people choose to volunteer with organisations that support wildlife, local families, older Australians, or environmental restoration.

Volunteering Australia has a search tool on its website that lists opportunities across the country, making it easier to find a role that is close to you.

Small ways to make a big impact

If you’re short on time, you can still contribute in meaningful ways. These small actions can have huge impact during the holidays

  • Donating food or essential items to local charities
  • Supporting community organisations through financial contributions
  • Helping an elderly neighbour with shopping
  • Taking part in local planting days or clean-ups
  • Checking in on someone who may be spending the season alone

Getting involved this holiday season

If you’re looking for a way to give back this year, there are many meaningful opportunities close to home. Local organisations like Liberation Larder rescue surplus food and turn it into nutritious meals for people who need extra support, offering an easy way to make a hands-on difference.

If you’re short on time but still want to contribute, consider sponsoring a child through Rafiki Mwema. Founded in the Northern Rivers, this organisation provides safety, education, and healing for vulnerable children in Kenya.

Whether you have a free afternoon or only a few minutes to spare, there’s a way for everyone to get involved.
