Recent public discussion regarding the CSIRO Northern Rivers Resilience Initiative has prompted questions about the position of both Summerland Bank and Regional Australia Bank.
As a founding member of the Lismore Alliance, Summerland Bank supports evidence-based discussion about the future resilience of the Northern Rivers. Regional Australia Bank supports the same principles of evidence-based decision making, community engagement and informed consultation.
Our support relates to the independent CSIRO research process and the recommendation that further feasibility studies and community consultation be undertaken before decisions are made. The report examines a range of options and does not determine which, if any, projects proceed.
Neither Summerland Bank or Regional Australia Bank has adopted a position on any specific flood mitigation project or infrastructure proposal. We are also not responsible for determining, approving or delivering any future flood mitigation project. Decisions regarding any future proposals remain a matter for governments and relevant authorities following appropriate assessment and consultation processes
We recognise that many members of our community hold strong views about the options being explored and we respect those views. We believe community consultation is essential and that any future decisions should be informed by scientific evidence, detailed assessment and meaningful engagement with affected communities.
Having supported many members through the devastating floods of 2022, we understand the very real impact flooding has on families, businesses and communities. Our focus remains on supporting the long-term wellbeing, resilience and prosperity of the region.
